Swayam Foundation has worked with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in monitoring Special Learning Programme (SLP) in six districts – viz Ahmadabad, Banaskantha, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Sabarkantha and Dahod.

Special Learning Programme for SSAThe SLP was a step towards the implementation of the Right to Education Act, as it was envisaged that all the learners will be accommodated in schools, it was imperative that the out of school children also be engaged and enabled to be a part of main stream schooling. Small centers were established in areas where there were more than 10 out of school children and one teacher would teach them.

Swayam Foundation had set up a network of mentors to enable these centers to work effectively and efficiently. Training was provided to the teachers to:

  • interpret the integrated syllabus provided by SSA, strategies;
  • deal with multi age and multi level students in the classroom;
  • counsel the parents of these students to ensure that the students were sent to school.

Further these centers were monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure that the classes were conducted regularly and satisfactorily. The learners were also periodically assessed to find out where they were improving in their academic areas and to take remedial actions wherever necessary.
